  11.           Dr. Clarence R. (John) Gates has been appointed
  12.  
  13. deputy assistant laboratory director for technical divisions
  14.  
  15. at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of
  16.  
  17. Technology.
  18.  
  19.           Dr. Gates will take over the position held by ì
  20. ì
  21. Walter K. Victor, who recently became assistant laboratory ì
  22. ì
  23. director for planning and review.
  24.  
  25.           Gates has worked at JPL for many years, and has
  26.  
  27. held a variety of technical and management positions.  He
  28.  
  29. led the team that designed the lab's first three-axis-ì
  30. ì
  31. stabilized attitude-controlled spacecraft, an early concept ì
  32. ì
  33. that led to the Ranger lunar series.  He has played a key ì
  34. ì
  35. role in establishment of JPL as the world leader in radio ì
  36. ì
  37. tracking and space navigation.

  39.           Gates received NASA's Exceptional Service Medal and
  40.  
  41. the Institute of Navigation's Thurlow Award for his work in
  42.  
  43. space navigation.
  44.  
  45.           He received his undergraduate education at the
  46.  
  47. University of Oklahoma, and did graduate studies at Caltech.
  48.  
  49. He earned a Ph.D. there in 1951 in electrical engineering and
  50.  
  51. mathematics.  He was born in Belvidere, Ill.
